Josh Mathews

Post by isrs4life » Fri Dec 19, 2014 12:46 pm

I havnt really been to much of a fan of Josh Mathews but one time him and JBL
commentated a few smackdowns last year alone from Michael Cole and I liked
him from the point of there. Impact should be fresh with Taz along side with him
I think I just got tired of Mike Tenay commentating forever well Taz did well
with Michael Cole to but its him and Josh now it should be a nice team.

I always liked Josh Mathews as an announcer. Having to work with Taz is a major bummer. Taz is complete garbage as a commentator.

If you had to choose between Taz and JBL though?

Which was precisely what I was getting at.

Sure, and I'd rather get ass raped with a crowbar than a cheese grater. What's your point?

I've never really wanted to reach through the screen and punch Taz in the face, JBL I have. I would say JBL is much worse.

You have to realize that JBL is "Vince". He's doing what's being asked of him, which is why he's stayed out there for as long as he has. And he's good for a few one liners every now and again. That makes him better than Taz.

I condemn both of them to commentary hell, and I don't try to sort out from there who's better or worse. Similarly, I don't try to pass definitive judgement on those I consider Olympian gods of commentary.

Alright, I'll bite, who are your Olympian gods of commentary?

Mine would be Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, Jesse Ventura, Gordon Solie & Joey Styles, I have to believe our lines cross somewhere in that mix.

There really haven't been many good wrestling commentators. Gorilla Monsoon, just don't know why he gets the love. Going back through these old shows and he is cringeworthy at best.

Bobby Heenan was great.
Joey Styles did amazingly well with so much freedom and often no partner.
Jim Ross is the best PBP guy ever.
Gordon Solie was good for sure.
Attitude Era Jerry Lawler was very good.
I think Tony Schiavone was not as bad as I originally believed. He had very little direction with a poorly run product. Not sure he's an all time great, but he knew how to get invested in the big moments.

I've always hated Lawler, I don't like his voice and he's always struck me as kind of a pervert. I know he's got a mind for the business, I don't even mind his rasslin', but I hate listening to him. He's dumb as a post.

I've seen bit of ppvs from WCW like Halloween Havoc 94, Bash at the beach 98
and Road Wild 98 and Bret Hart vs. Sting from Halloween havoc 1998 and
the bret hart&Chris Benoit owen hart tribute match were some of the great
commentating skills Tony had.

I don't have a Olympus of commentary. I was just filling out the analogy, and keeping it in line with wrestlers & matches, for which I do have upper and lower thresholds.

I'm willing to bet anyone that says Monsoon was one of the best is actually saying the pairing of Monsoon and Heenan to be the best. Which they were. Their back and forth banter was the stuff of commentary legend.

Monsoon and Ventura were a great pairing for that reason, too. In an age where the emphasis was on grandeur and easily-digested moral dichotomy, Gorilla Monsoon was terrific at playing up both of those elements. It was the perfect situation for him. Put him in a different product, and yeah, he's probably not cutting it. Frankly, I'd say the same for Heenan.

Heenan was just that good. Gorilla and Heenan were a great team but Bobby was able to easily elevate all those around him into being better announcers. Gorilla without him wasn't nearly as good.
