2015 G1 Climax

Post by Red_And_Yellow » Sat Jun 27, 2015 7:09 pm

NJPW is stretching out the G1 Climax over more shows. It's a smart move. 19 shows in 26/27 days is still a lot but we'll see more multi-man tags. The tournament this year is lasting from July 20, 2015 to August 16, 2015. The finals will be at the Ryogoku Kokuigan, i.e. Sumo Hall.

Here are the participants:

A.J. Styles
Bad Luck Fale
Doc Gallows
Hirooki Goto
Hiroshi Tanahashi
Hiroyoshi Tenzan
Karl Anderson
Katsuyori Shibata
Kazuchika Okada
Kota Ibushi
Michael Elgin
Satoshi Kojima
Shinsuke Nakamura
Tetsuya Naito
Togi Makabe
Tomoaki Honma
Tomohiro Ishii
Toru Yano
Yuji Nagata
Yujiro Takahashi

They still haven't split these guys into groups yet. The field seems highly volatile this year and a few different outcomes seem possible. Although I do think this is probably going to be the Shinsuke Nakamura Invitational this year, and that it's his tournament to win.

Agreed that it's nice to see them spread the schedule out more. This also means that the juniors won't just be told to fuck off for a month, so hurray for more people earning a pay cheque.

A lot will hinge on whether it's Styles or Okada who walk out of Dominion with the IWGP Heavyweight title. I'm most interested in seeing which of the holy trinity (Tanahashi/Okada/Nakamura) get put in a group together. Would be a good time for Okada to grab a victory over Tanahashi, one would think. I'm with you on Nakamura, especially if Okada wins the title. They had a terrific match in last year's G1 final, and even at that time, I figured that having them headline 1/4/16 would be the game plan.

If not Nakamura, I think Tanahashi's the man to take it. It really is scandalous that he's only won the G1 once, 8 long years ago. At some point, he simply has to enter the club of two-time winners.

Also don't overlook that now that we're back in Sumo Hall, with no worry about selling tickets, one of the old horses could get a miracle run. But there's almost no way this year's winner isn't a repeat champion

Repeat champion is possible, that's why I'm going with Nakamura though.

What are people's thoughts on a Ibushi/Nakamura final possibly? I kind of like the idea of Ibushi constantly knocking at Nakamura's door but never being able to kick it in. The issue though is he won the NJ Cup, he could be a candidate to be with Okada (if Okada wins the title) and beat him to set up a championship match in the lead up to WK10. Granted, I think the final will probably be Tanahashi/Nakamura and that they will separate the two.

New Japan is very protective of their G1 finalists. In two and a half decades, no Japanese wrestler who came up outside the New Japan system has made the finals. Him getting a group-stage win against the Trinity (which I've decided to make official terminology) makes perfect sense. Making it to the finals is saying NJPW will break one of its most sacred traditions.

I think Goob's onto something, with the old guys. The past couple years, whenever they've run the Sumo Hall, Nagata has been super-mega over. He's the guy I'd bet on the lose in the finals.

I've already been on the record, elsewhere, as having either Naito or Nagata as my choices. I would back off Naito if he's in the same block as the champion, as he would be a prime "win during the block phase and get a title shot" candidate.

They've spent the last 8 years putting over first time winners, except for last year when Okada won his second. Chono and Tenzan won the 5 tournaments before that. Nagata is a guy that has quietly sat here, being the conscience of New Japan for over a decade, and I still can't get that PV (promotional video) from New Beginning out of my head, with him teaching his son his history and wanting his son to be able to see him being as great as his reputation purports him. They planted that seed of a Blue Justice Dream for a reason, I have to believe, and I'm holding out hope for it.

But this, like any other tournament, is Nakamura or Tanahashi's to lose. I just can't buy that Okada will win back-to-back tournaments (champ or not), and whomever loses at Dominion certainly isn't going to Wrestle Kingdom

Wasn't the point of that video to set up Nakamura/Nagata?

It was meant to set up Nagata as someone that could be a threat at that top level, after what...4 years of slumming it in mid-card feuds, or propping up NOAH. Just to remind everyone that Yuji Nagata is kinda a big deal

Ah okay, maybe I missed that part. I was kind of seeing it as Nagata's last hurrah.

If it is Nakamura who wins it, Nagata would be the PERFECT guy to put against him in the finals, because of New Beginning. Hirooki Goto would be a great choice for that role, too, obviously. If it's Tanahashi, I'd like to see him FINALLY conquer Naito in a tournament setting. If anyone but those two are getting the win, Nakamura or Tanahashi are always the go-to finalists.

They really made Block 1 interesting, lot of interesting rematches in there. Really intrigued to see where they go with Tanahashi/Shibata for the 3rd straight year. Last year's match between them was ridiculous.

Though you were warned, Red. Two of Nakamura/Okada/Tanahashi have to be in the same block, every year. You can't avoid it

I just found this guy on Twitter:

He is translating what is being said by commentators and in interviews at NJPW. Some interesting stuff in there.
