Indeed.
From what you've heard/seen Evan, who/what are the favorites to walk out with the gold statues this Sunday?

Re: 89th Academy Awards
Wishful thinking abound I was fairly happy with the nominees this year. Would have liked to see loving get more nominations and I really think Ruth Negga deserves best actress but it looks like it's going to be La La Land's year. I would say mostly deserving but it'll probably win more than it should. Would have liked to see Abel Korzeniowski's score for Nocturnal Animals get some recognition but such is life. Best Actor looks like the only category that's too close to call, it remains to be seen whether Casey Affleck will eke out a win or Denzel will pull it off. Looks to be neck and neck.

Yeah, it seems that any movie that shows tons of love to Hollywood or reminds the older folks in the Academy of the Good ol' Days of movies (Musicals, Cowboy Flicks) , has an edge at the Oscars.

Re: 89th Academy Awards
I just wish they had saved all the love for La La Land instead of giving awards to The Artist. That just looked embarrassing for them. Birdman was in a similar vein but was just accomplished and outside the box enough to not really count as a movie about Hollywood celebrating itself.

True. It'll be funny in like 10-20 years when the younger members of the Academy will start giving out awards that remind them of their good ol' day, superhero flicks and such.

Wow, that ending was pretty surreal.
Re: 89th Academy Awards
Well, that won't be an academy award presentation that will be soon forgotten.
Ah yes, 2011's the Artist. A movie exactly no one but the Academy members who voted for it remembers.eobversion1 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2017 3:23 pmI just wish they had saved all the love for La La Land instead of giving awards to The Artist. Caught the winners this morning online. So happy for Ali and Viola Davis getting those wins, surprised that La La Land didn't pull the Best Picture, Zootopia won to the surprise of no one, and look and Suicide Squad getting a Best Make-Up Oscar.

Re: 89th Academy Awards
The Artist was a garbage Nucks, The King's Speech beating the competitors it had that year might have been worse but they were both pretty bad decisions in my estimation. Part of why the show became stale for a while.
An interesting way to end the evening. Moonlight cashed in Money in the Bank to steal it from La La Land at the last minute. A bad analogy but it is what it is.
Ultimately, I don't care who wins as long as good movies continue to be made and are celebrated on their merits and that's what we got last night.

Yeah, sucks that Moonlight kinda had it's moment ruined though.

True, better late then never I guess. Plus maybe it gets an extra bit of name recognition because of the flub.

Yeah. Don't know how to feel about Casey Affleck getting the win. Dude is a talented actor, but the stuff surrounding him is just...yeah. I know we should always try to seperate the art from the artist, but in a lot of cases it is a damn near impossible thing to do.

Re: 89th Academy Awards
I can understand why people can't separate the two but I'm going to give Casey the benefit of the doubt here. I'd never be able to enjoy anything if I was constantly digging through the personal background of everyone involved. He was great in Manchester by the Sea and a worthy winner, I'd rather have a discussion on whether or not he deserved it on the merits. Creating art requires a level of thoughtfulness and empathy. Being a jerk doesn't. It's not like he's Polanksi or Bill Cosby or anyone like that, people deserve a second chance.
