Poetry and lyrics
Poetry and lyrics
Just a random thread for when a line or two from a song or poem enters your head and you just want to share it with the community here.
For instance:
When all these walls come down
They'll shake us
We fight not to be, not to be weightless
Oh when all these stars hit ground
They'll wake us
We fight not to be, not to be weightless
Heavyweight
Our Lady Peace
Curve
I've been on such an OLP kick lately and it's mostly centered around the album Curve. This song and Is This It seem to be the two that are topping that list lately.
Also, the two sites I go to for all my lyrical needs:
www.azlyrics.com
www.darklyrics.com

Re: Poetry and lyrics
I could be your greatest accident
I could be the blood on your fingertips
Nothing's wrong
Nothing to regret
Just want to breathe you in
If this is it
I could be your greatest confidant
And I could be the head laying on your breast
Just want to breathe you in
The light, the love, the hope is near
The weight we're under disappears
If this is it
If This Is It
Our Lady Peace

Re: Poetry and lyrics
Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.
Thank You

Re: Poetry and lyrics
I was lonelier than Kunta Kinte at a Merle Haggard concert
That night I strolled on into Uncle Limpy's Hump Palace lookin' for love.
It had been a while.
In fact, three hundred and sixty-five had come and went
since that midnight run haulin' hog to Shakey Town on I-10.
I had picked up this hitchhiker that was sweatin' gallons
through a pair of Daisy Duke cut-offs and one of those Fruit Of The Loom tank-tops.
Well, that night I lost myself to ruby red lips,
milky white skin and baby blue eyes.
Name was Russell.
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Well I find it's quite a thrill
When she grinds me against her will
Yes a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'

Re: Poetry and lyrics
I love this verse:
So break yourself against my stones
And spit your pity in my soul
You never needed any help
You sold me out to save yourself
And I won't listen to your shame
You ran away, you're all the same
Angels lie to keep control
Ooh, my love was punished long ago
If you still care, don't ever let me know
If you still care, don't ever let me know
Snuff
Slipknot
All Hope Is Gone
So break yourself against my stones
And spit your pity in my soul
You never needed any help
You sold me out to save yourself
And I won't listen to your shame
You ran away, you're all the same
Angels lie to keep control

Re: Poetry and lyrics
You say that love is a disease
Restless in its company
Like a river to the sea is where you run
You say that all the birds have flown
The heart an antique turned to stone
There is comfort in this great unknown
And all that you've known
And all that you've saved
All that you've known will someday change
Will Someday Change
Our Lady Peace
Curve
Seriously, can't recommend that album enough.

Re: Poetry and lyrics
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
Hurt
Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash
The Downward Spiral/America IV: The Man Comes Around
My absolute favourite song, in its entirety.

Re: Poetry and lyrics
This one takes me back:
She calls me from the cold
Just when I was low, feeling short of stable
And all that she intends
And all she keeps inside, isn't on the label
She says she's ashamed
And can she take me for awhile?
And can I be a friend, we'll forget the past
But maybe I'm not able
And I break at the bend
We're here and now, but will we ever be again
'Cause I have found
All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade
Away again
Shimmer
Fuel
Sunburn

Re: Poetry and lyrics
In the silence of this whispered night
I listen only to your breath
And in the second of that shooting star
Somehow it all makes sense
Lost Together
Blue Rodeo
I listen only to your breath
And in the second of that shooting star
Somehow it all makes sense
Lost Together
Blue Rodeo

Re: Poetry and lyrics
I got to hear it live back in 2003, during the SARS benefit concert in Toronto. If memory serves (by which I mean my memory of reading the lineup just now), Blue Rodeo closed out the first half of the show.

Was that before or after Justin Timberlake got pelted with garbage?

Re: Poetry and lyrics
Long before. JT went on fourth to last, I believe, followed by Rush, AC/DC, and the Rolling Stones. It was during his set that my friends & I made our move from where we'd been camped on a blanket all day to the crush at the front of the stage. Many people who had positioning there were fleeing while Timberlake performed, so we were able to cover a lot of ground.
It's worth noting that JT put on a pretty great performance, especially considering the crowd hostility. I'm sure it was quite a different atmosphere from the next night, when he opened for Christina Aguilera, at the ACC.

Re: Poetry and lyrics
Yeah, it's nothing against JT, he's very good at what he does, it's not my sound though, and very evidently not his crowd at that concert. I felt bad for the guy.

Re: Poetry and lyrics
He knew exactly what he getting into, and wasn't phased by it. When he came out to do a song with the Stones, someone through a bottle, and Mick Jagger volleyed it right back into the crowd. That brought Keith Richards over to egg the guy on to throw something else, which got a pop.

Re: Poetry and lyrics
Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All of five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she was
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds of what was everything.
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything.

Re: Poetry and lyrics
There's no reason, there's no secret to decode
If you can't save it, leave it dying on the road
Wide open arms can feel so cold
So cold
Feel so cold
Silver jet plane, making a turn
Exciting the brain that expects it to crash and then burn
It's not the life lesson I'd have guessed
If you're conscious you must be depressed
Or at least cynical
The empty sky surrounds me but I can't see at all
Wide open arms can feel so cold
And you can sit beside me and tell me what it's worth
But I hope I die before I get sold
I hope I die before I get sold
I'd rather die before I get sold
Siberian Breaks
MGMT
Congratulations
My absolute favourite current band, who unfortunately will never get the appreciation that they deserve for the quality of their lyrics. Funnily enough, a bitterness at the hollowness of the mainstream music industry and suppression of those who attempt anything out of the box is what inspired some of their best lyrics, such as these ones. There's a very clever little reference to The Who in there as well.
