Main Show

We open the show in the ringside studio, where Gene Okerlund welcomes the United States Heavyweight Champion “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Gene congratulates Piper for successfully defending his championship at Sudden Death. Roddy Piper is fired up, and says that you’re damn right that he’s still the champion. The NWA desperately needs at least one champion that they can be proud of, because it sure as spit ain’t Ric Flair. Piper continues to run down Flair for taking shortcuts, and using every underhanded trick he can to try to force people to respect him. Nobody respects him as their boss, nobody respects him as champion, and nobody respects him as a man. The way Piper sees it, this presents him an opportunity. An opportunity to show “The Nature Boy” what a REAL champion looks like. So tonight, Piper tells Gene, that he’s holding an open challenge tonight. An open challenge where the United States Heavyweight Championship will be on the line. That’s right, Piper is willing to give ANYONE in the back a shot to prove themselves a worthy challenger, and in the process, Piper will prove himself a worthy champion. One that everybody can respect.

Rating: A

United States Heavyweight Championship
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper vs Young Muta w/Paul Jones Army

Piper doesn’t have to wait long for his first opponent to show up, as Paul Jones walks out the youngest member of his Militia. The Young Muta fires out of the gate, looking to surprise Piper, but the champ is cool as a cucumber, and weathers the storm. The Young Muta shows a glimmer of promise here, but his inexperience catches up with him, as he leaves himself wide open for Piper to slap on the Sleeperhold, allowing the champ to retain in short fashion.

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper via Sleeperhold (4:24)
Rating: B

Before Piper can finish celebrating, we go back to the interview area, where Bob Caudle announces a surprise appearance from the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair. Ric Flair corrects Bob by saying that he’s also the acting manager of day-to-day operations for Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling. And that’s why he’s out here. He tells Caudle to beat it, and then focuses his attention to Roddy Piper. He says that he heard everything Piper said, and he feels personally attacked by one of his subordinates. Flair feels that some form of punishment in order. So, he tells Piper to not go too far, as he will be defending the United States Heavyweight Championship again later tonight. Flair says this is a warning to Piper, and to EVERYONE in MACW. Flair closes by saying to be the man, you gotta beat the man. But you can’t beat the man, when he IS the Man, so fall in line, and know your place.

Rating: B+

“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan & Bugsy McGraw vs Dick Steinborn & Ron Slinker

The champs come out with purpose, intent to work off some frustration following their tainted win against the Briscoes at Sudden Death. Steinborn and Slinker try to make a go of it, but Duggan puts this one on ice with an emphatic Old Glory Knee Drop.

Duggan via the Old Glory Knee Drop on Slinker (5:52)
Rating: C+

We return to the studio, and see Gene Okerlund welcoming his guest at this time, Paul Jones. Jones enters the shot, his Army surrounding the Gene and Jones at the podium. Okerlund asks Jones if he feels disappointed that the Young Muta couldn’t bring the United States Heavyweight Championship into his Army. Jones says that he may have lost the battle, but they will win the war. You see, Mr. Flair has named the next challenger for Roddy Piper’s United States Heavyweight Championship, and it is the man of mystery, the second strongman, Assassin #2. And when my boy brings the championship home, we will be one step closer to being complete. One step closer to having what we deserve. The spoils of war WILL be ours. And there isn’t anyone who can stop us.

Rating: B

United States Heavyweight Championship
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper vs Assassin #2 w/Paul Jones Army

Piper knows the deck is stacking against him, but he comes out fired up. Piper takes it to the Assassin with some rights, and looks to put this away early. Unlike the first match though, the Army makes their presence felt in this one, as Jones trips up Piper, and The Assassin takes a cheap shot, as Assassin #2 argues with the ref. With the Army surrounding the ring, Piper does everything in his power to keep things in the center, away from their influence. The ref threatens to throw this one out, but Piper tells him to let it go, he’s got this. Assassin #2 senses that this is his moment to strike, but he’s too eager, and Piper traps him with a schoolboy, for the win.

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper via Rollup (6:38)
Rating: B+

Piper returns to the studio, where Bob Caudle is waiting, congratulating Piper for his two successful defenses tonight. Piper stops by for just a moment to yell into the mic “This is what a champion looks like! Take a good look, Flair. Take a good hard look!” before he leaves the studio fired up. In walk the tag team champions of “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan & Bugsy McGraw. Duggan keeps his message short and sweet, saying that the Army is going to get their attention. Duggan says they’d be happy to step into the ring with the Army, and teach you a lesson.

Rating: B+

The Mulkey Brothers (Bill & Randy) & Brady Boone vs Sgt Slaughter, Don Kernodle & Pvt. Jim Nelson

Slaughter and Co come out in full force, and run roughshod over the Brothers and Boone. Slaughter mercifully puts this one away, after toying with his prey, with the Stomach Breaker.

Sgt. Slaughter via Stomach Breaker on Brady Boone (7:50)
Rating: C

Back in the studio area, Tony Schiavone welcomes his guest at this time, Jimmy Valiant. Valiant comes in, full of energy, as Schiavone talks about Valiant’s goals, now that he and the Dragon, Ricky Steamboat, dealt a huge blow to the egos of the Hired Guns. Valiant says his soul’s still shakin’ with excitement after that win. It feels SO GOOD to be back on the horse again. He says now that one obstacle is gone, he’s now focused on Greg Valentine. So listen up, baby. I’m going to shake, rattle, and roll all the way to the top, baby, and it starts, by taking out the Hammer.

Rating: C+

Jimmy Valiant vs The Spoiler

This match goes back and forth early. The first big swing comes when The Spoiler uses the ref as a shield, in order to cheap shot Valiant. From there, the Spoiler grounds Valiant, stomping away at him. Valiant finally gets an opening when The Spoiler goes for an elbow drop, and Valiant rolls away. Valiant starts to fire himself up. A series of rights, and a left to the body leave the Spoiler stunned. Valiant’s really feeling it, and he hits a big Back Body drop. He takes a moment to give a little shimmy and a shake, before dropping the Boogie Woogie Elbow Drop on the Spoiler

Valiant via Boogie Woogie Elbow Drop (9:07)
Rating: A

Gene Okerlund is in the interview area once again, and once again, Ric Flair strolls into frame, holding the NWA World Heavyweight Championship over his shoulder. He said he warned Piper that if he continued to run his mouth, there’d be consequences. So, once again, Roddy Piper will be defending his United States Heavyweight Championship tonight. This time, against the Mid-Atlantic Champion, The Great Kabuki. Flair smirks, before leaving the studio.

Rating: A*

United States Heavyweight Championship
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper vs The Great Kabuki w/ Paul Jones Army

Piper storms the ring, and starts taking it to Kabuki before the bell rings. The ref has to pull Piper off, before the bell can ring. The Great Kabuki heads outside after the bell to regroup, and gameplan with the Army. Much like the earlier match, the Army makes their presence felt early and often, except they’re a little smarter about it, making sure to distract the ref before getting involved. Things take a turn for the worse when The Assassin and Assassin #2 pull Piper out of the ring by his feet following a distraction, and lay the boots to him, before rolling him back into the ring. As things start to go south, Piper traps Kabuki’s arm after a punch, and stares him down, while barking at Jones. Piper lets the arm go, and throws a series of left jabs, before throwing a hard slap across the face of Kabuki. He tells Kabuki to bring it on. Piper ducks a clothesline, and hits a body slam. Piper waits for Kabuki to stagger to his feet, before slapping on the Sleeperhold. Jones has seen enough, and he barks an order at ringside. The Assassin hits the ring and drops Piper with a clubbing blow to the back of his head. The ref HAS to throw this one out and Piper retains.

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper via DQ Following The Assassin involvement (13:21)
Rating: A

The rest of the Army hits the ring, and they take their pound of flesh from Piper, putting the boots to him repeatedly. They prop Piper up, setting up for Kabuki’s Green Mist, when suddenly, the NWA World Tag Team Champions race to the ring, and start attacking the Army. The tandem starts to push the Army back for a moment, before the numbers game starts to win out. Before the tag champs can be overwhelmed, Jay Youngblood and Junkyard Dog race out to even the odds. Faced with these new foes, the Army backs off, to fight another day, as the damage is done. As they gather at ringside, as the good guys check on Piper, we see Flair come out and shake the hand of Paul Jones, as this edition of MACW LIVE goes off the air.

Jesus, Flair. I'm going to have to make sure California Doll ends up with you so that you can stop being a heinous asshole in MACW.

Roddy Piper though. He had his working boots on tonight. With Steamboat burned off (wink, wink) Piper has all the space to be the top babyface.

Stupid Paul Jones Army being awful midcarders!

But did I mention Roddy Piper? Because this was all his show. I guess Valiant and the tag champs did okay too. But really, this was ALL Piper

Piper takes on the whole freakin' Paul Jones army in one night! Rowdy Roddy was runnin' wild!

The Spoiler and Valiant though, with that outta nowhere A rating match.

The damn inmates are running the asylum in MACW.

Someone's gonna have to fire up his Dotmatrix printer and print some pure, table grade salt.

Not as out of nowhere as one might think. They both have excellent ratings in the basics, as well as *checks*... holy shit, the Spoiler has an A in charisma?

Didn't even hit a chemistry bonus, they're just solid fuckin' workers, I guess.
