fifty shades of grey

Post by endless » Fri May 25, 2012 9:27 am

Why is this a #1 bestseller?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71mX8ssfl5o

I use to think that I was too much of a hack writer to write a commercially successful novel. I'm a decent idea guy, but when it comes to the actual craft of writing I'm not good at all. I was always under the impression that professional writers just didn't do sentences like "He did *insert verb here* *insert adjective ending in "ly" here*. I guess I was dead wrong. I guess there really is nothing holding me back from writing a bestseller.

Also, this sets women back about 50 years. I consider myself somewhat of a feminist, but I think I lost a bit of respect for females everywhere after this.

Well, I've heard grown adult women try to explain to me why a series of books made for teenage girls are literary masterpieces. I mean, think about it for a second, if Twilight didn't set back womankind a few decades, I think this one lone book will be no worse.

I've heard about this book, and heard the writing is terrible. Not quite sure what the draw to it is, however, as a man, I can concede the book isn't written for me. Maybe it's one of those things I'll never get, like Pintrest, or Lifetime Original Movies.

I understand the appeal. Women are into erotic fiction. It's like porn for us men. Nothing wrong with that. My problem with this book is how poorly it's written. From a technical stand point, I'm shocked that this book could even be published much less that it's sold 10 million copies. From the passages that I've read(about 3 or 4 pages total) I can see that it commits some of the most basic cardinal sins of writing:
-Cliches out the ass. "My inner goddess" has become a meme because of this book. Hell, it uses "You go girl" in a none ironic manner.
-Everything is a damn simile or metaphor. This book tells everything and shows nothing.
-It repeats phrases over and over again in quick succession
-The narrator sounds as boring and dumb as Paris Hilton.

I've heard this book compared to Twilight, and that's not fair to Twilight. I've read a good chunk of the first Twilight book(don't ask), and it's better written than this. I've heard this book compared to fan fiction, and that's not fair either. Fan Fiction is free and done with the understanding that it's amateur work. Hell, I've read slash fiction that would blow this thing right out of the water. Fifty Shades is just bad. And the target audience isn't teenagers that don't know any better like Twilight. The target audience is adult women that in theory have been reading their entire lives and should know better. That's really what's disappointing about this.

But Twilight's target is teenagers that don't know any better, and grown women buy it and revere it like Tolkien. If you buy it from a bookstore you have to go to the Teenager section, at least this is marketed to the adult woman demographic. Now I know women whom are most certainly exceptions to the marketing ploy their gender typically falls for, but the mass amount of women that will buy shitty literature based on its romantic values is staggering.

The Onion explains the Twilight phenomenon, and I'm sure it sums up Fifty Shades of Grey as well:

A female friend of mine has had a number of people she works with read the book, and basically recommend the book based purely on its raunchy sex scenes.

Now I'm a woman whose done her own share of erotic writing, so I consider myself very open minded (I'm sure those of you who read The Cruiserweight's more raunchier moments could agree :D )

However, I can't believe this person is making the money they are off something so trashy. I couldn't get past the first two pages. To sum up, this "writer" - and I use the term loosely - is/was in serious need of an editor and perhaps a few courses in creative writing. I just don't see the phenom.

I think I got it...

Reading that book is like hearing a sexual confession of someone, or reading a crappy erotic tales page who has more porn than tales. Peolpe like that, it feeds their inner subconscious sexual desires. But reading it in a book, makes you like like a sir/lady and it doesn't make you feel like some sicko who logs in into porn pages.

Double standards.

From what I understand:

a). this novel started out as twilight fan fiction, but as the story got popular in fan fiction circles, the author got blowback about potential legal action so the characters names were changed and it's own original story grew out of that

b). the author, literally, does need an editor. It was initially self-published as an e-book.

c). for people that aren't jaded about all kinds of deviant behavior, perversions, and some of the other oddities you find on the internet, this is like the marijuana of BDSM. People that didn't really think about the idea of bondage and doms and subs totally are enthralled by the fantasy of what's going on, not breaking down how many times someone rolls their eyes (I heard it's a lot).

d). unless you're trying to impress your girlfriend or significant other who read it, why would you do it to yourself?

e). If you're a dude, take an extremely sexual passage, and tape yourself reading out loud as seriously as possible. When you finish, put the recording away. When you're having a bad day, take the recording out and play it back to yourself. You'll probably feel better then.

That's really all I got.

This guy sacrifices his sanity and blogs about reading the book that would make the folks who invented the printing press feel regret.
